The Latest On WordPress Themes

wordpress plugin
As WordPress and blogging become more and more popular, the list of customization options continues to grow. One can attribute that to each user wanting his or her blog to be unique or very much personalized. Who knows, one day a theme can be just as unique as the blog’s author! The following is an overview of the latest developments on WordPress themes.

WordPress Widgets

The blog software developer has recently come up with an edition of this plug-in for the full-version WordPress. A Widget here refers to those tools you can use to modify your site—its sidebar, design, or general layout—without having to know and use HTML codes. About a hundred Widgets are featured in the WordPress Widgets blog, and they are classified in categories such as photography, music, discussion, video, income, and links, among others. It is a fun and easy way of customizing your site, so that it features everything you care about, and nothing you don’t.

Not all themes are ready for these Widgets, however, and some modifications need to be done to include this fun feature in the sites that make use of such themes. http://Automattic.com gives full instructions on how to go about making your WordPress site Widget-friendly. WordPress is continuously adding to their already-vast selection of Widgets to suit their user’s whims and personalities.

Canvas Plugin

This blogger-friendly plugin has recently allowed blog users to create their very own theme for their WordPress blog. The good news is that this plugin allows users a pretty good level of customization without them having to study and use codes. The result: a site that looks very professional built within the range of a few minutes to a couple of hours. Even better news is that this plugin comes for free.

This stand-alone plugin opens up to a bare starting point, with a selection of blocks that you can include in your layout by drag-and-drop method. Among the many features of Canvas are Banner, RSS, Static Text, Feature, Digg, Flickr, Random Tagline, Comment, Category List, Asides, Archive, Description, Calendar, Search, Post, and Navigation functions. Meanwhile, an Ink tab gives the user the freedom to determine the styles to be used on the page, sans the need to check the actual stylesheet. This tab proves to be quite useful for beginners, because it features help links that corresponds to each theme component, the style of which you may be about to identify. These links load the template with an indication of the part in question, to give the user a clear idea of what effect the change will have.

“Being Moderated” Notification

It does not come as a surprise that some comments are being moderated by the recipient blog’s owner or moderator. However, it would be nice for you to let your eager comment writers know that you have received their comment, when the system is programmed to delay posting of comments on your blog until it has been read and approved by you. Without this notification activated, some of your readers may think that their comment just got lost and they’ll have to write their comment all over again, when in fact your blog has secured it and it’s only waiting for your approval. However, the blog author may need to be familiar with code to activate this feature. Nevertheless, it is one way to deter comment spammers from infiltrating your blog. Your may also word the notification in your liking. Here’s an example: “Thank you for your comment. It may take a while before your comment may be published. Please check back later.”

More Themes to Match Content

While it is all up to the blog author to decide, it would be quite useful to have a theme that will give first-time readers of your blog a pretty good idea of what to expect by simply looking at the design in use. For this reason, WordPress theme designers are coming up with more specific themes to match a variety of specific types of content. Experts say that the first several seconds spent by a visitor on your blog determine the impression they get of your site. So if your site fails to capture attention right away, then it’s most likely that you’re losing potential repeat readers or site visits.

When designing your site or choosing the appropriate theme, keep in mind that the first concern of a site visitor is whether or not the site has the kind of information needed by him or her. The visual elements, being much faster to grasp than the textual, will help in a big way. If the theme you choose does not correspond to the general content of your site, then attracting more followers will need more effort. Whether we like it or not, looks matter for a lot of people, as this is how beliefs and opinions are initially formed.

WordPress Theme Contests

To ensure your steady stream of new themes, WordPress and certain partners have organized theme contests to discover and recognize the best themes that have cropped up lately. Last year even saw several competitions that attracted theme creators and users alike. This year, however, the WordPress camp has witnessed a slowing down in the production of themes, perhaps due to the fading novelty of it all, not discounting the fact that a lot of those who submitted themes before did it for free.

Nevertheless, customization of WordPress blogs still holds quite a lot of promise, with the arrival of new customization features, such as the Canvas and Widgets plugins. It also promises more highly-customizable themes in the future. For now, you would already be missing out on a lot if you are not already trying out the latest WordPress customization plugins. You can also try modifying some basic features, such as whether your front page should show excerpts or the full blog entries, or changing the number of posts that will show up on your blog index, or both. Whatever you choose, there are hundreds of themes available and other options for you to use, to get as close as ever to your most desired look for your blog.

Blogger or Wordpress? - the Winner Is.

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007
wordpress plugin
If you do some surfing around the web, you will probably find that a majority of people advocate WordPress than Blogger.

Do you know why?

WordPress has an almost rabid following because it is built for ‘Web 2.0′. It comes with the inherent ability for users to utilize third party plugins, as well as tiny add-on programs called widgets. These add-ons enhance the functionality of the blog and make it better looking. If you do a search on Google for WordPress widgets, you may come back with a few days worth of data.

So if WordPress has so many cool plugins and widgets, then why do I recommend Blogger. The answer is not complicated. I am looking for traffic from the search engines and in particular visitors from Google. Since Google owns Blogger, I think we would be simple minded not to make an educated guess that they give Blogspot.com blogs more search engine oomph. To me that is what it is all about.

Also, it is so simple to produce blogs using Blogger. Even a person with no prior blogging knowledge can have a blog set up within 10 minutes. It is also extremely straightforward to add Google AdSense to Blogger blogs, while it can be a challenge on WordPress blogs. Once you have gotten your AdSense publisher ID, you just click a link to add an AdSense block to your blog and you can start earning income.

So the selection is clear-cut, if you want a more aesthetically pleasing blog, then go with WordPress. If you want a blog that you can throw up easily and quickly, get boat loads of traffic and make some quick AdSense money, then go with Blogger.

There are now some excellent software tools available, that let you set up and administrate multiple Blogger blogs from one central location. This makes it much simpler to monetize your efforts with Blogger.

Wordpress Shopping Cart : 8 Factors you Need to Consider

Friday, February 16th, 2007
wordpress plugin
WordPress shopping carts are very difficult to find. The majority of those that are available are still in alpha and beta development stages and not ready for a production web site. This is a great pity because Wordpress is the prefered tool of choice for many Internet marketers for well known reasons, including the speed at which you can deploy new sites, and the myriad of tools, themes and plugins that are freely available.

Given the current explosion in popularity this particular development environment is experiencing I am really surprised that there are so few wordpress shopping cart options available. The coding of these scripts and plugins must be a lot more complex than what one would expect.

If you are researching for a shoppingcart solution then the following points constitute the very least that a good system should offer -

1) If the solution requires installation on your server then it must be simple to install, and to configure. You probably do not want to pay good money to somebody else to install a complex script.

2) The shopping cart software must be quick and easy for day to day administration, via a secure web interface.

3) It must be extremely stable. You do not want any errors to occur when you have a hard earned customer busy paying you for your goods.

4) It has to be fast. The fastest shopping carts always work “in” your website. That means it does not leave your site and jump to the payment vendors site everytime a buyer adds a product to their basket. I always get annoyed with shopping cart software that constantly takes ages to add items to my basket.

5) The shopping cart must “look and feel” exactly like the rest of your site. The best solution is one where your customer sees no difference between the shopping basket and the rest of your web site.

6) Usability and simplicity is paramount. It must be extremely easy for your customer to use. Many niches cater to a less sophisticated clientele (not everybody is a computer geek), and you do not want to lose sales from within the shopping cart itself because your customer does not know what button to press next.

7) The shopping cart software must provide your clients with as many payment options as possible. At the very least it must accept PayPal payments, Google Checkout payments, and also all major credit cards and debit cards.

8) Lastly, being a full-time internet marketer myself, I often sell digital “downloadable” content. So, I look for a solution that will keep all of my product download locations completely secret and secure. Unique, hacker-safe download links for each of my product items must be automatically generated on a per customer basis. These download links must be configurable in terms of the number of times they can be used (and also the length of time that they can be used) to download the particular product that has been purchased. This stops a dishonest customer from sharing the download link they receive with other people who have not purchased, thereby defrauding you of sales.

Two Plugins to Help Increase Blog Comments

Sunday, February 11th, 2007
wordpress plugin
To allow your blog to be more interactive among your viewers it best to encourage them to comment on your blog.

Here are two plugins I used on my own blog.

This was the first Plugin, I have installed called Subscribe to Comments 2.0. It adds a “Notify me of followup comments via email” check box below the submit comment button. This is a great feature as users can keep track of comments, when a new comment is made to the post, an email is sent to the subscriber notifying them. This is much better then some plugin which don’t manage this subscriptions. Only readers who have made a comment can use this feature. That in itself encourages comments.

The Plugin is fairly easy to install as long as you know how to handle with FTP programs and upload the files to your plugin folder. You can download the plug for Subscribe to Comments 2.0 at http://txfx.net/code/wordpress/subscribe-to-comments/.

Show Top Commentators

In many cases, you will see this plugin installed in most blogs to encourage comments. This second Plugin is call Show Top Commentators. This Plugin encourages feedback and discussion by rewarding the reader for making a comment. The top commentator’s displays on the right sidebar along with the number of comment made and a link back to their site or blog.

The real incentive about this is that unlike links in the comments, the links on the Top Commentators are full links within any nofollow tag! What that means you will get the full attention of Google as well as FREE traffic! Just make sure your comment is a real comment and not spam!

Right now, the Top Commentators are reset once per month. The Plugin gives you the option to adjust the resetting from a day, a week, a month, a week, or never. To download the Show Top Commentators Plugin just visit http://www.pfadvice.com/wordpress-plugins/show-top-commentators/.

Embed Flash Video In A WordPress Blog

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007
wordpress plugin
There are many reasons why people want to add Flash videos to their WordPress blog sites. Maybe they want to introduce their website and products to their visitors, use as a training aid, show a webinar or simply show the new baby to distant relatives. What ever reason, website videos are used more and more every day.

If you have a real estate agency what could be better than a walk through tour of a property, a walk through of a yacht if you are a yacht broker or tours of sports clubs, hotels, workshops or what ever product you want potential customers to see.

You can hardly visit YouTube or Google Video to find a video about your hotel or sports club, you will have to make your own video or have it made for you. But let’s not talk about hotels and sports clubs, lets talk about you and the eBook or software program that you want to promote which is the reason lots of us have.

To get Flash video up and running we need to download some files and prepare our site. So lets get started now.

Step One: Preparing your site.

There are several plugins available for embedding flash video on your website, some are better than others and some are more user friendly. WP-FLV is one, FLV Embed is another and WordTube is the one that we will be using here. Visit the site, read up on the plugin and download it. Unpack the zip file and upload the folder into the WordPress plugins folder. Note do not change the folder names. You will also need the free, for personal use, Flash Media Player from Jeroen Wijering. Download the player from the website, unzip it and upload only the mediaplayer.swf file into the wordtube folder. Activate the plugin.

Go to your admin area, then Options, Manage, WordTube to set up the options. You can use the default upload folder or change it to another such as wp-content/videos. You can upload your files via Manage-Media Center. Note for streaming videos the Flash player will not show a preview, therefore you need also to upload a image (thumbnail) file. After uploading your video you can insert the tag (MEDIA=ID) into your post where you wish the embedded Flash video to be displayed. ID is the number of the video in the Media Centre. Make sure that you use UPPER case otherwise it will not work.

How to Set Up a Free Wordpress Blog in 5 Minutes

Thursday, February 1st, 2007
wordpress plugin
I’ve had a ton of people ask me lately how to get started marketing online, and more importantly how to get up their first website and start making money in the fastest time possible.

Most of you guys know, I am not a big techie person. And I always tell people that the best way to get started marketing online is by setting up a free WordPress blog. You can set up and update your blog with a few easy clicks!

Even if you don’t know anything about HTML or setting up a web page (I still don’t know HTML!), let me show you a real easy way to get a web page set up in minutes—literally!

Here’s what I did–first, I set up a Wordpress blog. It was really easy setting up a blog.

I just went into my cpanel within my Host Gator web hosting account, and I clicked the Fantastico button, and my WordPress blog was set up automatically.

Boom—instant website! How’s that for easy?

Now the thing about WP blogs is that WordPress sets up the shell, but then you can customize it and make it look however you want.

You do this by installing themes and plug-ins. There are millions of free themes to choose from, and more plug-ins than you can ever hope to use. I’ll list the plug-ins that I am using so that you don’t have to go searching endlessly for the right ones.

I found a free theme for my WordPress blog within Wordpress; I downloaded it, and then uploaded it with my FTP software. I then went to get some plug-ins for my WordPress blog (and you can search for these various plug-ins from within WordPress).

The plug-ins that I decided to use and that I recommend, are the following:

- All in One SEO Pack

- Add to Any: Share/Save/Bookmark Button

- Viper’s Video Quicktags

- WordPress.com Stats

- WP-EMail

- WP-EMail Widget

- AddThis Social Bookmarking Widget

- Google XML Sitemaps

- Ultimate Google Analytics

- Wordpress Video Plugin

- WP-SpamFree

- WP tags to Technorati

There are a lot of these plug-in, and millions of free themes to choose from with WP. You can tweak your blog, and add widgets, and start adding content that is important to you—that is the best things about blogs! Blogs are so unique and personal—you can really make them reflect your personality and your business any way that you want.
